Six-time champion Serena Williams, having missed the US Open last year as well as most of the 2017 season to start a family, returned to Flushing Meadows for the 18th time Monday night. With little match preparation – she had played just three matches on the North American hard courts this summer – Serena looked anything but rusty, prevailing in convincing fashion over 68th-ranked Magda Linette of Poland, 6-4, 6-0.

Serena seeded No. 17 but ranked 26th, pounced on Linette’s vulnerable, soft second serve, smacking clean return winners. Williams seemed to treat the match as a welcome opportunity to work on key parts of her game, including her serve and footwork.

Linette, 26, who had won just one match previously at the US Open, has a consistent game with flat strokes off both wings but few weapons to harm the likes of Serena Williams. Williams needed just a single break in the first set to take the lead, and she sprinted to victory in one hour, 10 minutes.  Early in the second set,

Williams sprinted wide and crushed a running forehand crosscourt passing shot, looking very much like the Serena Williams who has dominated the game for so long. With that vintage winner, she set up break point to go up a double break.
Williams closed out the match out with an ace, her 23rd winner, to pass her first test in Flushing. "I think I'm getting there," she said on the court, asked by Mary Joe Fernandez to assess the state of her game.

"It's not easy to get to any point in my career," Williams added in her post-match press conference. "The highs have been great, the lows have been, you know, like your normal lows. That's kind of how it is. You have to get through all those moments to live the next."
